About

Aisha Rahman was born in Loudon, Tennessee. She and her family have called East Tennessee home for nearly 40 years. Aisha is a graduate of the Webb School of Knoxville and decided to move to Atlanta to attend Emory University.

At Emory, Aisha developed her interest in family law, particularly on issues relating to domestic violence. In college, she interned at Raksha and the NAACP Washington Bureau. Both internships developed her keen interest in civil rights, social justice, women’s rights particularly. For law school, Aisha returned to Knoxville where she attended the University of Tennessee College of Law. Throughout law school, Aisha worked with Holland Law, a firm in Knoxville, Tennessee. There she learned family law from renowned attorney, Shannon Holland.

After law school, Aisha launched her legal career at Legal Aid of East Tennessee serving indigent survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in family law matters and remained there for two years. During her tenure at Legal Aid, Tennessee introduced an anti-Shariah bill and Aisha worked with various community organizations to educate the legislature on the xenophobic, illegal tenor of the bill. This advocacy also introduced her to Dr. Azizah al-Hibri and KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, who were educating communities nationally about the anti-Shariah movement and its negative impact on the civil rights of American Muslims. This led to Aisha being recruited to join KARAMAH’s team.

For six years, Aisha served as KARAMAH’s Executive Director and Director of Family Law. During these years, Aisha conducted national trainings with lawyers, judges, and advocates on family law. Aisha also started a legal services initiative at KARAMAH, where along with other attorneys, she provided pro bono legal assistance to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. This experience confirmed for Aisha that not only is there a need to provide affordable legal services, but also conscientious, unbiased, culturally, and religiously sensitive services. Aisha was on the DC Pro Bono Honor Roll in 2012 and again in 2013 for providing 50-100 hours of pro bono legal services. She is now known as a leading expert in gender-based violence particularly in Muslim communities. 



Aisha left KARAMAH in November 2017 to join The Baig Firm as an “Of Counsel” attorney specializing in Family Law. With over a decade of legal experience, Aisha handles divorce, custody, child support, Islamic marriage contracts, and other related matters. Aisha also continues to provide family law training to judges, lawyers, and advocates on a national level.   Aisha is married with one child.
